Rhode Island will keep two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. The state was facing the possibility of losing a Congressional seat when the 2020 Census Data was released. However, when final numbers were announced on Monday, the Ocean State managed to hold onto both of its seats.
The Constitutional purpose of the census is congressional apportionment, or the process of distributing seats in the U.S. House of Representatives based on population. Acting Census Bureau Director Ron Jarmin says seven seats in the House will shift among 13 different states. Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon will all gain one seat and Texas will gain two seats. California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia will all lose one seat.
