Providence City Councilor Nirva LaFortune is running for mayor.
LaFortune emphasized the need for a community police model and affordable housing during her campaign announcement on Sunday.
LaFortune was the first Haitian-American to be elected to office in Rhode Island.
"I woke up inspired, empowered, and honored by every person who took the time to be with us yesterday at the Southside Cultural Center," she said in a social media post this morning.
The current mayor Jorge Elorza is not running for re-election because he is term restricted.
