Providence Sues State Over Withheld Education Funding

The city of Providence is suing state Education Commissioner Angelica Infante-Green and the Department of Education.

The issue is the withholding of nearly five-million-dollars in state aid to the city.

The lawsuit is the result of a disagreement over how much money the city was obligated to allocate for schools for the fiscal year that ended June 30th.

Mayor Jorge Elorza tells Channel 12 News that the state is cherry picking which numbers to use that benefit its needs.

The state has been running the city's school system since 2019.
