Rhode Island is backing out of a climate initiative in Southern New England.
The governors of Massachusetts and Connecticut previously exited following concerns that the regional partnership amounted to a gasoline tax.
The acting director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said the initiative depends on the involvement of at least three jurisdictions to go forward, and that the Ocean State will have to explore other options for clean transportation.
The Connecticut situation is still up in the air. Governor Lamont had said that his state was out of the initiative only to say a day later that he would sign a measure if his state legislature approved the bill.
