Because of a law passed earlier this year by the General Assembly, liquor stores in Rhode Island can open on New Years Day. In the past they were not allowed to open on Thanksgiving or New Years Day.
The North Providence state representative who sponsored the bill, William O’Brien says it's a small way to help small businesses that have been hurt by the pandemic. “I am very happy that this law is in effect for the coming holiday.
COVID-19 has decimated our small businesses and this law is another small way we can help our small businesses recover from the pandemic.
If a liquor store chooses to be open on New Year’s Day, they should be allowed to operate their business, simple as that,” said Representative O’Brien.
