Law enforcement officers shot a man inside the Warwick Police Department headquarters on Friday.
Reports indicate the man stabbed an officer in the lobby of the building, but that the officer's bullet-proof vest kept them safe.
The suspect was reported in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
Four officers, including the one who was stabbed, have been placed on leave while the shooting is investigated.
Under the provisions of state law - the State Attorney General takes over the investigation while the four officers involved in the incident have been confined to desk duty.
