With every snow storm and freezing cold day, the number of potholes on Rhode Island roads continues to grow. By most accounts, this winter has been a particularly bad one for vehicle damage caused by potholes.

The Providence Journal's Jack Perry recently reported that Rhode Island has 17 roads with 13,000 potholes since 2021. Perry also reports that Clunker Junker, a junk car seller, claims that Rhode Island has the highest number of pothole complaints on Twitter, per square mile, giving the state the title of "Pothole Capital of the U.S."

If you hit a pothole and sustain damage to your vehicle, you may be entitled to reimbursement of expenses by the state Department of Transportation, up to $300. Be sure to note the exact location and time/date of the incident, and keep a record of any expenses and repair estimates. Claims can be filed on the RI Department of Transportation website, which also contains detailed information about eligibility and the documentation required to file a claim.
