A bill has been introduced in the Rhode Island legislature which would categorize women by their gender at birth, rather than their gender identity, for the purpose of organized sports.
The sponsors of the Fairness in Women's Sports Act, which covers intercollegiate and interscholastic events, are Republican Senator Elaine Morgan and Democratic colleague Frank Lombardo.
Community advocacy group LGBTQ Action RI says the proposed law is discriminatory.
The legislation was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 1st.
No hearings have been set yet.
