The Providence Friars used solid three point shooting and continued strong defense to beat Richmond in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 79-51.
Providence will play for the first time in 25 years in the round of sixteen.
Providence will play next Friday against the Kansas Jay Hawks.
The season for Providence will move to Chicago for the next round.
Coach Ed Cooley says he is very happy for the players and the program and the city and the state he comes from.
Cooley said it was the best they had played all year.
He admits that the team came into the tournament with a chip on their shoulders because of the pre tournament belief that their luck would run out.
Providence shot nearly 52 percent from the field.
54 percent from three point range and 78 percent from the free throw line.
Providence had five players in double figures including Noah Horchler who had 16.
