Friars Fall Short In March Madness Sweet Sixteen

The Providence Friars march to an NCAA Men’s Basketball title is over. But they gave the Kansas Jayhawks a scare.

The last remaining number-one seed in the tournament survived with a 66-61 win over the Friars in the round of sixteen played in Chicago.

Kansas lead at the half 26-17.

Providence came roaring back in the second half by outscoring the Jay Hawks 44-40.

Providence finishes the season with a record of 27 and 6.

Al Durham finished with 21 points.

"This was one of the best groups I've ever been around," Durham told reporters after the game. He said that he was indebted to Coach Cooley and Friartown for taking him in.

Kansas Coach Bill Self admitted that they didn’t play well in the second half but that was in large part to the intensity of the Friars.
