And The Winner Is----

Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles has gone through 940 license plate designs and over 300 thousand votes in order to find a successor to the longtime “wave” license plate.

And in the end it was the design of Williem Van Lacker of South Kingstown who came up with the winning design.

“Rhode Islanders have chosen a design reflective of the state’s character and the affection they have for the ‘Wave’ plate that will soon become a part of the state’s history,” said DMV Administrator Bud Craddock. “We’re pleased to have reached this point in our license plate re issuance program and will move forward now with the work of seeing license plates with this new design gets to vehicle owners around the state.”

Governor McKee called it “ a symbol of Rhode Island’s evolution over the years.”

The new plates will be produced and distributed later this year. Those drivers who are up for renewal first will get the new plates first.
