Tense moments for state and local police in Woonsocket.
The Rhode Island State Police provided an update on Thursday afternoon about an officer-involved shooting which resulted in the death of a suspect.
Russell Dufault of Portsmouth was wanted for a kidnapping and felony assault in Little Compton on Wednesday morning.
The state police and U.S. Marshals tracked down Dufault because he was allegedly armed during the incident and because he had a criminal history including several counts of armed robbery. He also had a record in Massachusetts according to officials.
The Violent Fugitive Task Force found Dufault behind the wheel of an SUV on North Main Street in Woonsocket Wednesday night.
With a gun in the vehicle, he allegedly attempted to drive away and was shot after knocking a marshal onto the hood and pinning a detective against a police cruiser, causing them minor injuries.
State police superintendent James Manni says officers tried to save Dufault's life at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at Landmark Medical Center.
The incident is under investigation by the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.
