App Upgrade Allows Beach Goers To Report Shark Sightings

The Sharktivity app has been upgraded.

It now lets beach goers in New England report shark sightings.

Until now, the app which was developed by the Cape Cod-based Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, only used data from scientists and public safety officials.

“The New England Aquarium is one of the nation’s premier institutions dedicated to marine life conservation, education and research, and our collaborative effort will enhance rapid and accurate confirmation of white shark sightings reported through Sharktivity,” said Cynthia Wigren, CEO and co-founder, Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. “Citizen scientists play a crucial role in the Conservancy’s mission to educate the community and improve public safety, and we rely upon and value their sighting data reported through the Sharktivity app.”

Anyone can now report a sighting which will be subject to verification by experts.
