McKee Calls On Legislature, Congress To Act Now On Gun Safety

As the investigation continues into a deadly Texas school shooting, Governor McKee is calling on the Rhode Island General Assembly and Congress to take immediate steps to pass gun safety legislation to better protect lives.

The Governor called the loss of lives in the Texas shooting “senseless” and said those actions must not continue.

“Last year, I was proud to sign into law the Harold M. Metts School Safety Act and legislation that bans straw purchases of fire arms.. However, further action is needed to keep our communities safe. That's why, I joined Rhode Island's General Officers in submitting legislation this session to ban high capacity magazines and assault weapons. It's time for the General Assembly to act immediately and pass those common-sense gun safety bills and send them to my desk for signature – it is time."

So far no state lawmakers are not scheduled to debate any form of gun legislation in the remainder of the legislative session. But that could change at any time.
