Rhode Island state Representative Marcia Ranglin-Vassell is not seeking re-election. She says she made the decision after a great amount of prayer and relection.
Ranglin-Vassell, a 62-year-old native of Jamaica, inspired future progressive primary challengers when she upset House Majority Leader John DeSimone in the Democratic primary in 2016.
The state rep says breaking down the structural barriers of inequality has been physically and emotionally taxing, but she'll continue to fight.
She says she will not take it easy between now and the end of the term. The State Rep says there is much to do in order to tear down systemic racism.
She represents the fifth district in Providence.
Among her advocacy work in the State House was health insurance coverage for doula services, which was signed into law by Governor Dan McKee last summer. Doula services are part of the emotional support team during pregnancy.
