Driver's Licenses, Guns And Money On State Lawmakers Agenda Today

It’s a busy day at the Rhode Island State Capital today where Governor McKee this afternoon will sign into law a series of gun control measures that will raise the age to buy a gun to 21 as well as ban high capacity magazine among other things. The state legislature passed the measures last week.

The State Senate is expected to give final approval to the 13 point six billion dollar state budget. The House has already passed the measure.

And, all eyes will be on the House Judiciary Committee today as it will take an up or down vote on whether illegal immigrants should be allowed to have a driver’s license.

Proponents of the measure say it will make the roads safer. But opponents say the measure will leave open a chance for people to be able to vote as well.

The Rhode Island measure is similar to one that was approved by the Massachusetts Legislature earlier this year over the objections and the veto of Governor Charlie Baker.

Several politicians have started a petition drive to try to overturn the law which will take effect in July of 2023.
