Former URI Tennis Coach Sentenced In Varsity Blues Case

Rhode Island native Gordon Ernst is being sentenced to prison as part of the federal Varsity Blues investigation.

Ernst is a former tennis coach for Georgetown University.

He was a standout student-athlete in the Ocean State, and was most-recently a tennis coach at URI.

Ernst will spent more than two years behind bars.

He was charged with accepting about three-and-a-half-million dollars in bribes in exchange for letting kids of wealthy parents be admitted to Georgetown.

URI officials have not commented on the sentencing.

They have said in the past that they were unaware of what he was accused of when he was hired by the university.
