Problem Gamblers Would Not Benefit By Winnings

A new Rhode Island law is being passed to prevent problem gamblers who are on the state's self-exclusion list from collecting winnings.

Instead, any money earned by someone on the list who went to either of the Ocean State's two casinos will be used for research, education and prevention of teenage gambling addiction at the RI Council on Problem Gambling.

State Senator Frank Ciccone says the bill reinforces protections for people suffering from the addiction, while investing in its future prevention.

“Problem gambling poses significant problems for those who suffer from it and for those who are close to problem gamblers. This bill reinforces our state’s protections for problem gamblers while also investing in preventing future problem gamblers from being created,” said Senator Ciccone of Providence.

The law provides for up to 150 thousand dollars to be utilized by the Council. The rest of the winnings would go to the general fund.
