The Providence Charter Review Commission is approving a new hybrid school board model.
Providence is one of two Rhode Island cities that has a school committee appointed by a mayor.
Most school committees are elected by ward or at large elections.
The new proposal, which would require City Council and voter approval, would split the board between appointees and elected members.
The current president and VP of the Providence School Board opposed the idea at a Monday night meeting.
Concerns were expressed that the hybrid board would limit diversity.
The Charter Review Commission had previously considered the implementation of a fully-elected school board.
