State Unemployment Lowest In 30 Years

The state showed more gains when it comes to restoring jobs in the latest employment report.

The State Labor Department says the seasonally adjusted rate in the latest report is 2 point 9 percent.

The May figures are the lowest they have been in 30 years.

“Today’s historic jobs report shows that Rhode Island has economic momentum, and we are continuing to build on that momentum every single day,” said Governor McKee. “In addition to a record low unemployment rate, Rhode Island also has one of the best ranked economic recoveries in the nation according to Moody’s. But now is not the time to take our foot off the gas – we must continue to accelerate this momentum, together.”

By the numbers- there are almost 554 thousand people with a job in the state.

In a statement - officials at the State Labor Department said several professions saw job gains.

"The Administrative & Waste Services sector led all employment sectors in job growth, adding 500 jobs in May, followed by a gain of 400 jobs in the Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sector. The May job figure of 7,900 in Arts, Entertainment & Recreation represents the highest figure since March 2020. Employment in the Educational Services sector rose by 300 in May, marking three consecutive months of job gains totaling 900 jobs."

And there was more good news with word that manufacturing jobs made $24 dollars an hour and increased in actual hours worked to 39.5 hours per week.
