Settlement Reached After Violent School Arrest

The American Civil Liberties Union says a settlement has been reached in connection to a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of a former Narragansett High School student.

An incident caught on video in 2018 shows a school resource officer, Kyle Rooney, slamming Michael Blanchette to the ground for an arrest after the eleventh-grader demonstrated a "rude hand gesture".

The confrontation was apparently over whether Blanchette was allowed to be walking in the hallway at the time.

According to the ACLU, the school district does not admit liability, but they have agreed to pay Blanchette 75-thousand dollars in damages.

So far there has been no comment from the school system.
