The California State Capitol building in Sacramento was evacuated on Thursday (April 13) after authorities received a "credible threat."
The California Highway Patrol confirmed the threat but did not provide any details about it.
A scheduled floor session in the Senate was pushed back and moved to another building.
KCRA reporter Ashely Zavala tweeted that security was turning people away from the building.
"Security is turning people away at the door and there is an increased CHP presence here. A protest on the west side is going on as planned," she tweeted.
The protest outside the Capitol was being hosted by Safety Net for All Coalition in support of a bill that would provide unemployment insurance to people who would otherwise be denied due to their immigration status.
Zavala reported that the threat appears to be related to a shooting on Wednesday night at a birthing center at Roseville hospital
"BREAKING: Multiple sources tell me the threat stems from the Kaiser Roseville shooter who last night threatened to shoot up the CA State Capitol. The scene is quiet and business is resuming in a separate building," she tweeted.
About an hour after the evacuation began, staff members were allowed to go back inside.
The suspect is not in custody. Officials advised the public to call 911 if they see a 2002 tan Ford F-150 with a California license plate number 6V04299 and a 1996 white Acura Integra with California license plate 6FWU532.
