State Senator Goodwin Passes Away At 58

State Senator Maryellen Goodwin has died at the age of 58. The Senate Minority Whip was battling cancer. The announcement was made out of the Senate President’s Office Saturday morning. Dominick Ruggerio said in a statement: “Maryellen made an unforgettable impact on all of us in the Senate, and on all who knew her. She lit up every room she entered with an infectious smile and razor-sharp wit. Our lives are richer for having known her.”

Governor McKee reacted to the passing of the Senator in a series of tweets.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the Senator — her leadership and courage have helped so many across our state. On behalf of the people of Rhode Island — thank you, Senator Goodwin. We will keep your legacy alive and keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.”

“From sponsoring legislation that supported seniors, to strengthening worker protections, fighting for increases in school aid — especially funding for English Language Learners — Senator Goodwin dedicated her life to public service,” McKee continued.

It was back in January that the Brown University’s Legoretta Cancer Center honored the Senator for her work in dealing with cancer screenings and other related issues. At the time the Senator said;

“I am very grateful for this recognition, and even more thankful to the Legoretta Cancer Center at Brown University for its amazing work in advancing cancer research, treatment and policy. I am always proud to partner with them any time I can, because we all want Rhode Islanders to have access to the very best prevention, detection and care when it comes to cancer,” said Senator Goodwin.

Services for the Senator have not been released.
