State Rep: RIDE Should Reverse Providence School Closings

State Representative Enrique Sanchez has introduced legislation that would direct the Rhode Island Department of Education to reverse the decision to close three schools in Providence.

“Our neighborhood schools are a huge part of our community and this decision to close them impacts all of us,” Representative Sanchez who represents Providence.

“RIDE should not be making major decisions like this without input from parents and teachers. They should keep the schools open at least another year and engage the community in a process to determine the best path forward.”

Sanchez previously drafted a resolution in the General Assembly which had the same goal of keeping open Feinstein and Lauro elementary schools and the Gilbert Stuart Middle School. The state-controlled Providence Public School District announced a school re-building plan in December which prioritizes a "newer and fewer" approach.

But Sanchez says neighborhood schools are a huge part of the community.
