Possible Vote Next Week On Debt Ceiling Increase

Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is encouraging President Biden to take action on the national debt.

Negotiations have been ongoing with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to raise the debt ceiling ahead of the June 1st deadline.

Senator Whitehouse says if talks break down, he is encouraging Biden to invoke the 14th Amendment. He argues that it would be unconstitutional for the government not to pay its bills.

It appears that both sides of the issue may be able to get to the finish line soon. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has suggested a vote could happen as early as next week. When the Senate could take up the issue is unclear. They are scheduled for a one week vacation next week. But Senators on both sides of the aisle say they could be back in DC in 25 hours if they needed to vote.
