A new – just signed law bans fluorescent light bulbs in the state.
The measure was signed into law by Governor McKee after passing the legislature.
State Rep Arthur Handy says when the bulbs are broken- they release mercury and that is a health and environmental concern.
The law bans the sale of bulbs as of January 1 of next year. The law does not require you to dispose of or stop using them though.
The Appliance Standards Awareness Project says by 2030 residents and businesses could save up to 20 million dollars.
136 thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide per year would also not be released into the atmosphere because of the law.
