State, Providence Charged Up Over Tesla Announcement

News Radio 920 WHJJ

A vacant Providence supermarket is being converted into a Tesla dealership. Governor Dan McKee and former Providence mayor Joseph Paolino Jr. talked about the plan at a press conference on Tuesday.

Paolino's property management company owns the former Stop and Shop on Reservoir Avenue, and he said it will be completely retrofitted for the electric car sales and service hub.

McKee said the state must rein in carbon pollution, and that a large investment has been made in charging stations.

Meantime, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley says that he has met with federal officials and he expects to use some 220 thousand dollars in federal funding to expand electric car charging stations throughout the city.

Rhode Island will ban the purchase of new gas-powered vehicles in 2035.
