North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi says repair work could begin quickly on the condemned condo units at Canterbury Village.
Residents were told to pack up and leave this week after the fire chief conducted an inspection.
They found torn-out ceilings which they said could have sparked a rapidly-spreading fire.
Lombardi blamed owner Vista Management for allowing deplorable conditions in the units, which were traced back to a burst pipe back in February.
The American Red Cross reserved hotel rooms for people who had nowhere else to stay.
