Newport officials are considering the installation of red-light cameras at key intersections in the city.
The aim is to discourage aggressive driving which has led to accidents.
Police are also looking at speed cameras; Captain Michael Naylor presided over an information session last night and noted traffic issues remain the city's number-one complaint.
Fines collected from the cameras are expected to cover their cost and maintenance. A proposal for bids is expected in the coming weeks.
