Rhode Island has called on researchers from New York University to examine whether the state should create a housing development section.
The Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy will conduct a six-month study of public-sector models used to build affordable housing in Montgomery County, Maryland, Finland, and Singapore.
Rhode Island officials and lawmakers have expressed interest in the Maryland model, which builds mixed-income units through a revolving fund of public money.
An interim report is expected in the spring.
