Reforms Of Medical Debt Industry Subject Of State Bill

Rhode Island's House Judiciary Committee heard testimony Tuesday evening, which would reform collection practices surrounding medical debt.

The reforms would include banning liens on homes, garnishing of wages, and reporting debt to credit agencies.

Among those testifying was Troy Peck, who detailed his daughter Aspen's prolonged battle against leukemia, which cost the family more than one million dollars.

Peck noted his family received help from charities, and his and his wife's employers, but what was clear was not all families were so lucky.

The committee tabled the legislation for further study.
