The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has begun converting both sides of the Washington Bridge to three lanes.
A spokesperson for RIDOT says this, along with moving the start of the bypass lanes in East Providence about one thousand yards from its current location.
The westbound span was closed on December 11th, and those lanes were shifted to the eastbound side.
Delays and backups have continued, and RIDOT warns the westbound side will require significant repairs or a full replacement.
A decision could come this week.
