Mayor Smiley Considers Bike Lane Change

Providence officials are considering ways to alleviate traffic congestion as the western span of the Washington Bridge is replaced.

The project is expected to take at least two years, and officials say permanent solutions to streamline traffic flow are needed.

This could include altering bike lanes or removing them entirely.

One likely target is the lane on South Water Street, near the pedestrian bridge.

While that is under review, members of the public say they would like to see police officers do more to direct traffic in areas of congestion.
