U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was in Providence Tuesday and toured the westbound span of the closed Washington Bridge.
Buttigieg says his agency will work to keep the timetable for replacement of the bridge on track and expedite the process.
Estimates are that replacing the bridge will take at least two years, and cost between 250 and 300 million dollars.
The Secretary did not commit to a specific monetary amount.
The bridge was abruptly closed on December 11th, after an engineer discovered damage that put the span at risk for collapse.
