Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti admits it is a "tense time" for commuters as they navigate the changes surrounding the Washington Bridge.
Two new travel lanes are being opened on the eastern span, which is handling two-way traffic, now that the westbound section must be replaced.
Restriping will make the far left and center lanes ten feet wide, with the far-right lanes eleven feet.
These must be used by buses, vans, and commercial trucks at all times, and the speed limit has been reduced to 40 miles per hour.
Alviti says the changes will make for a smoother drive, and he urges motorists to remain in their lanes while crossing the bridge.
