Judge Orders Recycled Metals Site Temporarily Closed

A Superior Court judge has ordered a controversial Providence business closed for the time being, saying that Rhode Island Recycled Metals was what he called “a public nuisance.”

Judge Brian Stern has ruled that the two fires at the Alans Avenue site are interfering with the right of the public to live in an area that is safe and healthy.

The judge ordered the Providence business closed until a “special master” is appointed. That person will work to ensure that the business complies with state, local and federal regulations.

A company attorney says they are satisfied with the judge’s ruling and that they expect to have a new safety plan ready within the next week or so.

Mayor Brett Smiley also reacted to the judge’s ruling:

“The temporary closure is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and health of our community. We remain committed to holding RI Recycled Metals accountable and ensuring any operation at this location meets all necessary safety and municipal regulations and hope that our partners at the state will hold them accountable for environmental impacts on our community. We will continue working with state partners to protect our neighborhoods and ensure all businesses operate safely and responsibly.”

Two fires have been reported at the Allens Avenue site. The last one just this week.
