Rhode Island AFSCME Leader Dies Unexpectedly

The president of Rhode Island Council 94, AFSCME has passed away at the age of 70.

On Sunday evening, the union announced the passing of J. Michael Downey and offered condolences to his wife and entire family.

Downey was elected as president of Council 94 in 2005.

The union says since his election, Downey provided bold leadership and constantly fought to enhance the lives of all working Rhode Islanders.

Funeral arrangements have not been released.
