NHS Receiving Federal Funds To Help Preserve 1690's Building

The Newport Historical Society is receiving nearly 400-thousand dollars in federal funding to help preserve a landmark residence that was built in the 1690's.

U.S. Senator Jack Reed helped secure the funding and toured the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House on Monday.

The funding will help to make the building a multi-purpose center and museum to elevate the stories of enslaved and freed Africans, African Americans, and their descendants.

The money will help fix issues with the building's exterior, install safety features, upgrade the electrical and plumbing systems and increase accessibility in accordance with ADA standards.
