Providence Mayor Brett Smiley says he will not give the struggling Providence School System ten million additional dollars to operate through the rest of the fiscal year.
The Mayor telling reporters that he was given 24 hours to provide the money, or threatened with the school department making cuts.
The Mayor says "they (the school department) continue to operate under unbalanced budgets. then expect other people to solve their problems," the mayor told a city hall news conference.
The mayor did leave the door open a bit to a bit of a life raft.
The mayor said he would come up with a million dollars for the school system, if the state put in three million dollars, and the school department submitted to a third party audit.
The mayor also told reporters that he has no confidence in the budgeting skills of the department.
A school department spokesman says that investing in children should not be controversial.
