Rhode Island General Treasurer James Diossa has announced the launch of a new program to ease the burden of unpaid medical bills for residents.
Under the program, Undue Medical Debt purchases medical debt from health-care providers like hospitals and physicians' groups and from debt collectors on the secondary market.
During the 2024 legislative session, the General Assembly passed legislation creating a program, to be administered by the Office of the General Treasurer and funded it with one-million-dollars for the purchase, cancellation and forgiveness of medical debt.
