Rhode Island leaders say state and city police will not support the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants that President-elect Donald Trump called for during his campaign.

Governor Dan McKee's office says State Police are committed to prioritizing the investigation and prevention of violent crimes and will cooperate with the lawful detention of violent criminals, but they are not immigration officers.

The statement continues by saying State Police will not expend time and resources to support mass deportation efforts.

A spokesman for Providence Mayor Brett Smiley says police will not and should not be immigration officers.
