Tenants of a building that's being called "the last affordable, working-class space" in Providence are forming a union.
Atlantic Mills tenants held a rally Saturday at Riverside Park and announced their intention of forming the Atlantic Mills Tenant Union.
One of the demands of Rhode Island's first-ever commercial tenants union is to be able to negotiate directly with the building's landlord.
At the heart of forming a union is concern for the future of Atlantic Mills, which was built in 1852 as a fabric mill.
The building's sale to a New York-based is pending.
While the potential buyer says he plans to keep the existing tenants and make improvements to the building, the Olneyville Neighborhood Association is urging the community to make sure Atlantic Mills stays under "true community control."
