State-run Providence Public Schools could return to local control as soon as next year.
This, after Rhode Island lawmakers announced nine areas of improvement for the transition to take place.
Some of those stipulations include requirements of the new school board, a commitment from the local government for funding for schools, building improvement plans, and more.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley says the city's ready to take control this year, but the Rhode Island Department of Education says more of a plan needs to be in place.
