Lawsuit Filed On Behalf Muslim Inmates

Four Muslim inmates in the High Security Center of the state prison are suing the Department of Corrections.

The lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island argues the DOC is violating federal law by restricting the inmates ability to observe Ramadan, which begins in a few weeks.

Additionally, it claims Muslims are not allowed regular access to an Imam while Christian prisoners can see chaplains weekly.

It also argues that Muslims are denied access to religious items including prayer rugs.
