General Treasurer James Diossa says the Rhode Island Medical Debt Relief Program has forgiven more than seven-million-dollars' worth of unpaid medical debt since the program launched last fall.
Diossa says more than three-thousand Rhode Islanders have benefited from the initiative that purchases, cancels and forgives qualifying medical debt.
Residents are eligible for relief if their medical debt equals five-percent or more of their estimated annual income or if their income is at or below 400-percent of the federal poverty line.
