NTSB recommends Risk Review For Vessel Strike At Newport Bell Bridge

The National Transport Safety Board says the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge is one of the nation's 68 bridges that must be assessed for the danger of a collapse after a vessel strike.

The NTSB made the announcement while giving an update on last year's collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore after it was struck by a cargo ship.

The NTSB says its report does not suggest that the bridges will collapse, but it recommends that the owners evaluate if the spans are above the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials acceptable level of risk.
