Rhode Island Senators React To Funding Bill

The U.S. Senate has voted to end the government shutdown, and the measure must now be approved by the House.

A group of Democratic lawmakers voted in favor of the bill, but Rhode Island Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse did not.

Reed says he could not support the bill because it fails to deliver actual relief and doesn't stop the devastating health care price spikes.

Senator Whitehouse says it's hard not to feel frustrated, but the energy Democrats spend fighting among each other is energy lost to the bigger fight.

He says Democrats need to fight hard for a good ACA extension in December and hold Republicans accountable if they betray everyone. He says the December vote is a huge moment that can become a victory.
