Rhode Island's Speaker of the House will not be making a run for governor this year.
On Tuesday, Democrat Joe Shekarchi issued a statement saying after deep personal reflection, he has decided to continue to serve as Speaker and will not be a candidate for Governor this fall.
Shekarchi says the best way for him to serve the people of Rhode Island is to continue his work as Speaker of the House.
He says his energy will remain focused on crafting a budget that supports Rhode Islanders and finding solutions for issues like health care, hospitals and housing.
