National Guard Clears Snow In Providence

Members of the Rhode Island National Guard are in Providence to help the city dig-out from the Blizzard of '26.

Mayor Brett Smiley requested support, and the troops were deployed to assist city and private contractors in the effort to clear the roads and sidewalks.

The mayor also says the city started bringing in large, snow-clearing vehicles last night.

Meanwhile, the Providence Fire Department is asking residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Fire officials say vehicles that are abandoned after getting stuck in the snow block streets and create serious delays for firefighters responding to emergencies.
