Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport has rolled out a high-tech upgrade for travelers who want to skip the lines. The biometric electronic gates are designed to help Clear-Plus members save time by using facial recognition technology to verify their identity in seconds, allowing them to walk through the eGate and go to physical screening.
“Identity verification of every traveler prior to flying is a key step in the security screening process,” said Daniel Burche, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Rhode Island. “This technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent IDs such as driver’s licenses and passports at a checkpoint and it increases efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identification. We just want to ensure that you are who you say you are.”
Travelers will insert their ID into the card reader and look at the camera. If the ID is validated, the traveler then proceeds into the checkpoint. Even with TSA’s use of these units, travelers still need to check-in with their airline in advance and bring their boarding pass to their gate to show the airline representative before boarding their flight.
T.F. Green is the 40th U.S. airport to use eGates.
